Soldier, get ready, it is time to fight against procrastination! The enemy has invaded your life, and it is the moment to regain lost ground.
Your goal: setting free personal motivation from the claws of the adversary and find the courage, the desire to make the choices that will allow you to live a fulfilled and serene life.
Soon you will find the one who bites you, and then you can achieve all your goals and enjoy all the benefits and personal satisfaction that accompany them.
However, before that, we will have to face the enemy! So forward, march!
1. Procrastination: identify the enemy to eradicate it
Fighting against procrastination can be effective, only if you genuinely know what it represents and how it materializes in your daily life.
If procrastination is defined as the tendency to always putting off impending tasks to a later time; and, therefore, the difficulty to jump headlong into one’s projects, it is appropriate to expand its traditional scope.
It is often used to define a professional attitude, a lack of seriousness associated with the difficulty to perform a task that would not bring immediate satisfaction.
It is not meaningless to apply it to larger areas, such as psychological or personal life change (housework, daily obligations…).
The enemy disguises himself in forms as diverse and varied, making it difficult to overcome procrastination.
Here are the three main keys: if you spot them, shoot without warning!
Who does not put off the execution of a task to a later time, or does not stop in the middle of it to send a little “tweet”, change his Facebook status or look at his emails?
We say that it only takes a few moments, it will not harm our effectiveness.
The problem is that these seconds quickly turn into minutes even into hours. In that state, we can say it: procrastination won the battle!
Procrastination is insidious, vicious. It attacks your psychology, letting you find justifications, invent priorities to devote yourself to the art of not doing what you have to do.
That little voice, telling you that you should unquestionably answer your sister’s email, buy cigarettes or call your darling to ensure that he or she is well while you are trying to work on your current task is lying to you!
She just wants to make you deviate from your road.
The ready-made formulations and miscalculations:
“Well, I will just do it quickly, and then I start”, “if I count it stays about 10 minutes before the end of my television series, this leaves me 50 minutes to write my article… I write about 2.7 lines per minute, so if I multiply that by the number of characters…”
Ahhhhhhhh! Red alert! Procrastination is in sight! It makes you lose your head, to the point of starting theorizing a proof of your lack of motivation and desire to get to work!
Whether it materializes in an apparent (pushing you to watch a video of a cute little cat, or the last clip of your favorite band) or a pernicious manner (“Ah, I just received an email I have to read … it is surely significant!”), procrastination is always there, waiting for your moments of weakness to strike.
However, now that you know his face, you will be able to counterattack!
2. Procrastination: pull out the big guns to get rid of it!
To score points in your fight against procrastination, you have to develop an action plan.
It is time to demonstrate your strategic skills and hit where it hurts!
Here is the one that I would recommend:
Fight procrastination by setting clear goals:
If the process of performing a particular task seems daunting to you, maybe it is because you think only of the immediacy of it.
Before you embark on a project, think in terms of objectives: Are these latter in line with your psychology?
What will be the impact? By focusing on the input, on the reward, we can usually find more quickly our motivation and end up the weariness of the routine.
This is especially true if you undertake a radical change in your life: searching for a new job, lose weight, or expand your skill set.
All these projects require the crossing of significant barriers and a daily bravery.
However, at the end of the path, benefits in the long term that will stimulate confidence, self-esteem, and self-love are awaiting you.
This is perhaps what we must keep in mind, right?
Fight against procrastination thanks to temporal limits:
The deadline system is an excellent way to boost your motivation and better organize your daily life.
Your role is then to divide up your goals into smaller tasks and give yourself a time limit to achieve them.
The whole without forgetting, of course, to give yourself pause times (also timed!)
You will get from it more personal satisfaction, thanks to the sense of accomplishment resulting from the completion of each stage bringing you closer to your goal, and that will allow you not to lose your focus.
Procrastination often appears from the fact that these time limits are blurred, just as the precise definition of the conditions to be met to enjoy the benefits of a project.
As you can imagine, the principle of deadlines also pushes you to put into question your possible obsession with perfection.
The latter is not of this world and generates frustration and discontent, which are the procrastination engines.
Once the deadline is passed, and the task is performed, move on! A well-defined organization will prevent you from wasting your time and concretely increase your efficiency.
Fight against procrastination by sharing your projects:
All pressure is not negative. Speaking of your goals and your plans to your friends and family, allows you to have support, a booster shot.
When they see you, they certainly will ask you where you are in the progress of your projects, allowing you to explain your progress proudly.
Enough to boost your motivation: it is hard indeed to bring to light your tendency to procrastinate in front of people who support you!
It is the material part of your action plan. When you decide to start the battle, you have to encourage your ability to keep your focus on limiting the influence of the outside world.
To do this, you will need a tidy and functional workspace, to close your mailbox and all your messaging, to separate yourself physically from your mobile phone (which will remain in your bag or another room until you grant yourself a break by respecting your schedule) and isolate yourself as you can do it.
Simple reflexes that will give you no choice, but to demonstrate your seriousness!
3. Procrastination: keep fit to cover your back
In this war against procrastination, your psychological state, but also, the physical one is key.
You cannot keep your commitments and continue the fight if you are exhausted, stressed, under pressure or weakened.
Very few soldiers think about this fundamental aspect to move towards personal fulfillment.
A positive state of mind, healthy food, clean lifestyle and a reasonable sleep time are just as important as an iron motivation.
How to fight if you sleep less than 4 hours per night or that hunger torture you regularly? Taking care of your body is also to ensure some daily efficiency.
Your goals should not make you forget your feelings, your health and your mood affect your tendency to let you go to procrastination.
My advice? Why not start the day with a half-hour walk in the fresh air before getting on a good breakfast that will provide all the energy needed to face any obstacles which may itself up facing you?
An active soldier is a soldier in good health!
Ah, procrastination! So much content about it and yet the enemy still has not surrendered! However, it is not the technological development that will fix things!
